We are a problem-oriented culture, one that pays a great deal of attention to what is wrong in our lives. We spend far less time paying attention to all the positives – the experiences in which we feel most alive, the places where we have been resilient in the face of adversity, or the times when we feel joy. And we pay a price for gravitating towards the negative.
Positive Psychology is not about putting a happy face that covers over our important life struggles. It is about balancing suffering by amplifying our authentic well-being. It is an evidenced-based approach for increasing our capacity (or our clients’ capacity) for flourishing, and for fully appreciating our lives. People who have a higher ratio of “positivity” to “negativity” have more energy and better health.
In this 2 ½ hour workshop, we will use Focusing to personally explore pillars of Joy, as defined by the Dalai Lama and Desmond Tutu, and we will reflect on positive defining moments in our lives that have elevated us or brought us greater connection. We will then explore how to have greater access to these transformative moments.
This workshop contains 80% new material not covered in previous workshops as seen in the class objectives below.
The video link will be an easy to use format called Zoom. You will need to have a computer/mobile device. Calling in by phone is also possible but not preferred. The class will be held in meeting format and recorded so that all participants will see the presenter and each other. (There is an option to turn off your video if you prefer and technical instructions will be given at the class start). All registered participants will be sent a link to the video recording approximately two weeks following the course. So if you are unable to attend in person, you will still be able to view the class.
Joan Klagsbrun, a practicing psychologist and longtime Certifying Coordinator, teaches at Lesley University in Cambridge Massachusetts. She has taught Focusing internationally to therapists, health care providers and the public for over three decades. Joan has written articles in professional journals, several chapters in books, and has a CD and a DVD. She was awarded the Alice Ladas research award for her study on Focusing with women with breast cancer.

Refund policy: A full refund minus a $25 administrative fee for cancellations 14 days before the start date. Cancellations less than 14 days before the start date are nonrefundable. The International Focusing Institute reserves the right to cancel or re-schedule for insufficient enrollment or for other unanticipated reasons. In such cases you will be given a choice of applying your tuition to future programs, or having the full enrollment fee returned to you.
