Focusing: An Introductory Workshop

- VIRTUAL -

Online via Zoom: 9:00-12:00 on Saturday, March 20, 2021

You have lived in your body since conception. It has a lot to tell you.

Focusing is a mindfulness tool that helps us listen to the wisdom in our bodies. It helps us understand ourselves in ways that mental constructs alone cannot. We learn to foster a relationship with our inner world that lets us gain both compassion for and distance from our inner experience. This is a tender art that allows us to glimpse and loosen wounds, to ease difficult emotions, and change habituated patterns.

Focusing can be both an invaluable personal practice and a complimentary tool for clinicians, body workers, health professionals, educators, mediators, and parents. For any individual wishing to move forward from a place of embodied knowing, Focusing is simple, comforting, and gently powerful.

Focusing is most easily learned in the company of others and this introductory workshop offers the perfect first step in that process. We will cover the basic elements of Focusing through demonstration and simple exercises to give you a rich, friendly, experiential taste of the process.

Sliding Fee Scale: $30 - $60

CANCELED - Positive Aging: Recollecting Highlights and Gathering Wisdom for the Journey Ahead

- CANCELED -

Aging has, as one of its benefits, the possibility of perspective and looking back. It also has the promise of greater wisdom for future living. This workshop, for those who consider themselves to be in mid-life or beyond, will explore highlights from  our lived years, and will open us to the intrinsic wisdom we carry within.  We will explore what aging means to each of us,  and will reflect on how we have gained wisdom from past experiences. We will then turn to the future, and explore how,  through Focusing, we can find personal wisdom for our journey ahead.

At the Arlington Center
369 Mass Ave.
Arlington, MA

Cost is $25 payable at the door by check or cash.

Joan Klagsbrun, Ph.D., a psychologist in private practice, has been teaching Focusing internationally to psychotherapists, educators, healthcare providers and the public for over three decades on seven continents. Her current passion is crossing Focusing with creative  expression and positive aging.

CANCELED - Writing Stories from Our Lives

CANCELED

Focusing is very much an artistic process—moving us towards what is surprising and revelatory. In this workshop we will explore how memoir (freshly recollected history of one's life) and Focusing (a way of freshly revealing oneself to oneself) can work synergistically. We will be writing recollected stories from “prompts” for 8 minutes a piece, and sharing them (without critiques) in small groups.

With Julian Miller

Julian A. Miller is the author of Breaking Through , The Conquest of Aging, and I Should Praise. He is a poet, writer, and a long-term tai chi teacher. Focusing and its relationship to writing has intrigued and engaged him for the past three decades.

Mar 1 | Apr 19 | May 3 | June 7

Cost is $180 for the series

As taught by psychologist and philosopher Eugene Gendlin, Focusing is a gentle, compassionate and non-judgmental way of listening to our own inner experience and listening to others. It is a special kind of awareness, different from our everyday awareness, that emerges when we pause, become present to the moment and attune to the body’s sensations with gentleness and curiosity.

You will learn how to connect with the felt sense, approach issues with friendliness and compassion and develop new skills as a listener. You may explore how you might use this process to make change in your life, find what is truly alive for you, relieve stress, develop more empathy for yourself and others, or touch into the spiritual dimension of your life.

There will be experiential exercises and didactic material in each session. The class will offer time for practice, demonstration, discussion and learning from one another.

Adult Children, What Do They Need From Us?

Adult Children, What Do They Need From Us?

In this workshop we will explore the complicated and challenging role of being a parent to our adult children.  In this relationship, we sometimes find ourselves in no-mans-land, where any hint of “parenting" is  often unwelcome.  Despite our belief that we have “great wisdom and insights” to offer our adult children, our advice is often unwanted and offering it counter-productive.

So what do our adult children really need from us?  And what do we want for them?  In this workshop we will explore how as parents, we can foster and maintain positive and warm connections in light of our sometimes ambiguous role, their wants and needs and our own. The basic tenants of mindfulness, and in particular focusing, can guide and enhance our capacity to be attuned to our adult children, and ourselves, so that we can respond to them in supportive and creative ways. Through case examples and experiential exercises we will apply the principals of mindfulness to these precious relationships.

An Inner Journey Through Movement

An Inner Journey Through Movement

Dance/movement therapy and Focusing both provide avenues for accessing and expressing our internal wisdom and knowing. Focusing is an internal process for attending to and accessing our bodily knowing and illuminating new knowing about a situation or issue. Because we take ourselves, and thus our bodies, with us wherever we go, our bodies experience our reality on every level, making it a wisdom-filled vehicle of our being. We will use movement as a way to become more present to our whole body being. We will use movement as a way to access a more enlivened sense of our selves. This can enhance the practice of Focusing And we will use movement as a way to explore the felt sense that arises from Focusing and to share that through the nonverbal language of movement. In these ways our knowing ourselves will be deepened by the experience of moving with Focusing.

At the Arlington Center, 369 Mass Ave. Arlington

Cost is $25 payable at the door by check or cash.

Focusing on Poems to Change Your Life

Focusing on Poems to Change Your Life

"The act of reading poetry tunes the ears of the heart to the real way in which human beings most honestly and most deeply talk about their lives when they are speaking from the core of their experience". John McDargh

Together, we will tune our ears of the heart with accessible and engaging poems.Through our spending time with a poem, we will practice Focusing’s distinctive process that invites gentle awareness of what echoes inside. We will lean into poems to deepen resonance with our meaningful experiences. Since poetry is more powerful when heard, we will share poems aloud with intention to listen and respond with our body-self. Through turning toward the heart of a poem, we will offer recognition of our felt sense as a compass for our own unfolding life path. Poems chosen for clarity of expression and enhancement of meaning include the work of Mary Oliver, Wendell Berry, William Stafford, Derek Walcott, and Marie Howe. No prior reading of poetry is necessary – the instructor will provide the poems; we will provide each other with an afternoon of Focusing and rich sharing.

Creative Writing Inside Out

Creative Writing Inside Out

Are you a kitchen-table poet? A novelist with professional aspirations? Does writing feel like flying… or like stacking heavy stones? Beginner or experienced, we all wish to write effectively, with words that carry forth our personal truth in an authentic voice. Guided by the leader's belief that art is the Felt Sense made public, this workshop will give participants an opportunity to experience how Focusing can clear a path that leads from the inside out, from our felt knowing to the page. Together we will practice tapping this wisdom by writing to unique prompts (some serious, some not-so-much) to create and share fresh pieces in a spirit of non-judgmental support.

David Smith is certified as an instructor with the International Focusing Institute and as a coach with the Creativity Coaching Association. He has been a writing teacher and coach for over 40 years, he uses Focusing to forward his own work and that of his clients. His book/CD Writing the River: Self-discovery and Creativity through Experiential Journaling is available through the Focusing Institute.

Cost is $25 payable at the door in cash or by check.

Focusing and Poetry: One Poem—Many Stories

Focusing and Poetry: One Poem—Many Stories

"I am scorched to realize how many small, available things are in the world that aren't pieces of gold or power - that nobody owns or could buy even for a hillside of money - that just float about the world, or drift over the fields, or into the gardens...."  from Summer Story by Mary Oliver

In her powerful poem, Summer Story, Pulitzer Prize poet Mary Oliver shows how close attention to a cherished moment and her ongoing life story intersect. Through time together with this poem, we will practice Focusing's distinctive process that invites gentle awareness of what echoes inside. We will lean into this poem to deepen resonance with our own meaningful experiences. "Memory is the diary that we all carry about with us," wrote Oscar Wilde. Indeed, each of us is a collection of stories. With simple prompts, we will gather vivid details from our lives. What emerges may include nuances of experience to a special memory. No prior reading of poetry is necessary -- the instructor will provide the poem (and others if time allows); we will provide each other with an afternoon of rich reflection, stories, and conversation.
